Water absorption by spring-barley bedding straw
AbstractA review of literature on the water absorption properties of commonly used bedding materials (straw, sawdust, peat, paper) revealed very little relevant information. No papers describing scientific measurements specifically aimed at measuring absorptive properties were found. Those papers which did contain estimates of water-holding properties either did not record the source of their information or they indicated that the values obtained were from brief measurements of an unscientific nature. A set of experiments was undertaken to provide basic information on the absorptive properties of whole or choped spring-barley bedding straw. These were based on the volume of water absorbed and retained by samples of straw under different wetting and draining conditions. They show that 1kg of unwetted whole straw retains 2·4 litres of water after draining for 2 h, which is 20% more than does chopped straw.
