The influence of geological factors on the mechanical properties of basic igneous rocks used as road surface aggregates
Abstract The research described in this paper is performed on igneous rocks of basic composition. The mechanical parameters analyzed are impact value, flakiness value, abrasion value and durability. The relationship between these mechanical strength indices and the geological parameters is described by multiple-regression analyses. Of all independent variables, the mean grain (mineral) size has the greatest impact on the mechanical strength of the rocks. The strength increases as the mean grain size decreases. The effect is strongest for mean grain sizes under 1 mm. There is also a significant reduction of the mechanical strength as a function of an ‘increase in amphibole/ decrease in pyroxene’ contents and the degree of metamorphic alteration of the rocks.
