Physical and mechanical properties for metakaolin geopolymer bricks
Highlights Studied fly ash-based geopolymer paste incorporated with metakaolin. The mixture of sodium hydroxide and sodium silicate was used as alkaline activator. Significant increase in compressive strength at 10% replacement of metakaolin was observed. SEM (EDS) analysis of fly ash-based geopolymer paste was also observed.
Abstract In an attempt to dispense with cement and eventually, replace it if possible, Geopolymer mixes containing metakaolin are mixed with other pozzolanic materials such as fly ash and silica fume to improve strength and workability. An investigation of 15 mixes was conducted to examine the effect of using metakaolin on mechanical and physical properties. The results show that the tested Geopolymer mixes can be utilized as an effective binding material. It can be cost effective in producing brick units. The ideal addition of metakaolin to mixes was 10% as the resistance of the geopolymer bricks reached values up to 250 kg/cm2.
