Biogasification of woody biomass: Ipomoea fistulosa plant stem
AbstractBiogasification of Ipomoea fistulosa plant stem (IFPS) was carried out in batch digesters at 37°C. When cattle dung (CD) and IFPS were mixed in ratios of 1:0, 3:1, 1:1, 1:3 and 0:1, under uncontrolled conditions of pH and total volatile fatty acids (TVFA), digesters fed with 25% CD + 75% IFPS, and 100% IFPS went sour, and the highest quantity of biogas (449 litres/kg of volatile solids (VS)) was produced by the digester with 75% CD + 25% IFPS. A digester with 100% IFPS, but whose pH was controlled at around neutral, produced 555 litres of biogas/kg VS. Of four IFPS particle sizes (0·0888, 0·4, 1·0 and 6·0 mm), the 0·4 mm particles produced 98% more biogas than did the 6·0 mm particles. With IFPS which had been pre-incubated in water, the digester failed when pH was uncontrolled, and 7·6 litres of biogas/kg VS was produced by 40-days pre-incubated IFPS, while with controlled pH the maximum gas production was 647 litres/kg VS for the same IFPS.
