The socialist face of the GDR: Eastern Germany's landscape— past, present and future
Abstract The eastern German landscape was significantly transformed by socialism during the past 40 years. Colletivization created expansive field subdivision in contrast to smaller, sometimes fragmented, western German farmsteads. Villages with historic architecture are badly in need of reconstruction. The Bezirk capital cities benefitted from their function of centralized authority, and the concentration of commercial, administrative, cultural and industrial activities. Although they reflect central planning for communal services, they lack the vitality resulting from central city residential and retail activity. Large city-center open spaces offer anticing development opportunities. Decades of unabated pollution and lack of advertising have muted the urban scene, but changes are already evident. West Berlin is no longer confined, and its population is enjoying a more normal regional relationship. Berlin is rapidly assuming a major role as an international hub city for central Europe.
