Abstract To understand flame retarding and smoke suppressing mechanisms of developed nanocomposite flame retardant (NCFR) on bitumen and bituminous mixture, thermogravimetry (TG) and cone calorimeter (CONE) tests were performed, and combustion parameters of TG and CONE tests were discussed. Results indicate that combustion behaviors of bitumen and bituminous mixture are efficiently inhibited by NCFR. More compact and stable char residue is formed on bituminous mixture. NCFR reduces the smoke release amount and mass loss rate in condensed and gas phases during bituminous mixture combustion, and plays the roles of flame retarding and smoke suppressing effects, improving fire safety of bituminous materials.
