Structural masonry and architectural expression
AbstractStructural masonry has a formidable history, which has been subjected to much analysis by scholars in architecture and engineering. This paper attempts to abstract and explore in detail the nature of the distinct architectural expression this form of construction yields. Illustrative examples are carefully selected and include a project by the author. The intention is to demonstrate how the lessons learnt are or can be put into practice in worked examples. A brief coverage of one or two historic buildings explores how symbolic value is extracted from the robustness of this form of construction and considers the relevance of these values to the empirical temper of our times. The paper then concludes with some remarks on the relationship between engineering, building methods and architectural aspects of load-bearing masonry construction.
