Design of least weight cold-formed steel sections
Abstract This paper deals with the minimum weight design of cold-formed hat-shaped steel sections in accordance with the AISI (1968) specifications. The minimization is carried out using a direct search method. The results of the study are given in the form of sectional dimensions and minimum weights. Results are compared in terms of different design considerations: different applied loadings, different span conditions (single, two-equal-span continuous and three-equal-span continuous), different span lengths, and sections with or without intermediate stiffeners.
