Definition of flange slenderness limits on the basis of rotation capacity values
AbstractTo assure a sufficient deformation capacity for plastic design, the slenderness of flanges with I-profiles is limited to maximum b/t ratios. This paper proposes a procedure for defining critical b/t ratios by comparison of available with required rotation capacity values. The available rotation capacity of a section has been evaluated experimentally. The results of 24 beam tests are shown in detail. They indicate three governing parameters for the rotation capacity: the flange slenderness, the web stiffness and the steepness of the moment gradient.Furthermore a method of calculating the available rotation capacity is described and results of a parametric analysis carried out with this calculation method are presented. These available rotations are compared with required values which have also been defined by means of the calculation method. From these comparisons of dependence on the actual web stiffness and steepness of the moment gradient, the critical b/t ratios can be derived.
