Underground exploration and testing at Yucca mountain
Abstract Underground exploration and testing are major components of site-characterization efforts, under the direction of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), for an underground repository for high-level nuclear waste at Yucca Mountain, in Nevada. The DOE's current program involves extensive tunneling throughout the geologic block at Yucca Mountain, with the goal of gaining visual access to the complex geology at the site. This report reviews the status of the underground exploration and testing program, and reports the Nuclear Waste Technical Review Board's recommendations concerning future strategies for the exploration and testing program.
