The influence of moisture on building joint sealants
Abstract In this study, the first phase of an investigation of the performance of sealants with porous substrates, the effect of wet and dry conditions on the properties of sealants mounted in test blocks of cement mortar and glass-reinforced cement (GRC) are evaluated. From the test data two indices of sealant performance, modulus and elongation at break, are examined in detail. Most of the test joints exhibit progressive reduction in breaking load with increasing time of immersion in water and the location of sealant failure suggests that water weakens the sealant near its bond with the substrate. These observations may help to explain why sealant joints on more permeable substrates like GRC have been prone to failure under wet conditions.
