Review of different stabilization techniques adapted in ballasted tracks
Highlights The performance of ballast stabilized with different techniques is reviewed. Geosynthetics help in reducing the vertical strains of ballast. Bitumen-stabilized ballast increased the intervals between the maintenance activities. Polyurethane-stabilized ballast exhibited reduced settlements.
Abstract The ballasted tracks require periodic maintenance to retain the track alignment and restore the track geometry. In an effort to overcome these challenges, various track stabilization techniques like introduction of geosynthetics in track substructure and the treatment of ballast with bitumen and polyurethane is adapted by several railway organizations. The geosynthetic insertions provide additional lateral confinement to ballast owing to the interlocking of particles within the geogrid apertures. On the other hand, the bitumen and polyurethane stabilization creates a bond between the individual particles thus helping in improving the track performance. This paper critically reviews the performance of ballast stabilized with different techniques. The practical benefits and the associated challenges with each of the stabilization methods are also highlighted in the paper.
