English and Welsh colliery spoil heaps - mineralogical and mechanical interrelationships
Abstract Seventy-four post-failure triaxial test specimens from fifteen colliery spoil heaps in England and Wales have been chemically and mineralogically analysed. Three mineral groupings emerged from statistical correlations: clay-minerals, coal and carbonates, with the coal group showing strong inverse relationships with the clay-minerals group. Correlation matrices of physical and mechanical properties versus mineralogical and chemical components have enabled the main mineralogical controls on the physical characteristics to be recognized. Coal is believed to be a major factor which influences not only peak shear strength, but fundamental properties such as natural moisture content, plastic limit and indirectly bulk density which correlates positively with the clay-minerals.
