Two examples of instability under follower load
AbstractTwo rather simple and loosely interrelated, but at the same time intriguing, examples of instability of a beam or a column under followed load are examined: (1) a beam-cantilever acted on by a so-called quasitangential or semitangential bending moment at the free end, and (2) a free-standing column loaded, at the free end, by a semitangential follower force accompanied by a displacement-dependent bending moment. The first topic—even if in a straightforward from very well known—serves herein as an introductory example to the intricacies of a consistent large-displacement analysis of flexible space frames with inherently rigid connections at the joints, which is dealt with in referenced literature. The second example offers an opportunity to demonstrate how a smooth equilibrium path of divergence can be drastically cut off by bifurcation of the equilibrium.
