Nonwoven needlepunched geotextiles in low cost roads
AbstractThe paper studies three principal areas of application of geotextiles and their use in low-cost roads. The reason for using geotextiles and the economies that derive from their inclusion are discussed. In edge drains more economical locally available materials may be used and may have a longer useful life. In base separation pumping of underlying fine material is prevented and drainage of the base layer is improved. Surface dressing incorporating a geotextile that can strain and act as a reservoir for bitumen improves the serviceability of the road structure. These benefits more than offset the minimal cost of the geotextile.
