Prediction of subsidence in the Indo-gangetic basin carried by groundwater withdrawal
Abstract The Indo-gangetic basin is a major sedimentary basin in the northern part of India filled with unconsolidated alluvial deposits. The exploitation of groundwater from the Indo-gangetic basin is increasing with the development of the region. In the present paper, simulation of groundwater flow and rate of subsidence of hetrogenous.multi-aquifer systems of the Indogangetic basin has been carried out using a quasi three-dimensional model consisting of a three-dimensional hydrologic model coupled with a one-dimensional consolidation model. The governing equations have been solved with the finite difference approach. The model parameters have been selected from deep well logs and from relevant laboratory tests. Detailed analysis has been carried out to investigate the effect of pumping rate and the number of deep tube wells on subsidence. The analysis of the results shows the significant effect of discharge on subsidence. An empirical relation has been proposed based on the detailed modelling for prediction of subsidence in the Indo-gangetic basin.
