Conditions for the effective utilisation of computers in urban planning in developing countries
Abstract As a result of the advent of microcomputers, cost factors and technical considerations no longer seriously inhibit the utilisation of computers in urban planning in developing countries. Such developments highlight the critical role of organisational factors in restricting or facilitating the use of computer based technology. With this in mind, the paper reviews the findings of studies from both western countries and the developing world and sets out three conditions for the effective utilisation of computers in urban planning. These are the need for a clearly defined information management strategy, the personal commitment of individuals at all levels in the organisation and organisational and environmental stability.
