Geomembrane compatibility tests using uranium acid leachate
AbstractThis paper compares the results of two different types of geomembrane compatibility tests with a simulated leachate from a uranium mill. One technique involves two-sided exposure by immersing samples in liquid (recently adopted by the National Sanitation Foundation). The other technique closely simulates conditions in an acid-leach uranium tailings pond by exposing the geomembrane to leachate on one side only and by simulating stresses due to tailings and leachate. In both cases elevated temperature was used to accelerate degradation. The two techniques produced similar results in most cases. Advantages and disadvantages for each technique are discussed.
