Abstract Shield tunnels include thousands of segments connected by bolts. Therefore, there are many joints in shield tunnels, which greatly weaken their integrity. Many accidents have indicated that tunnels undergo large-scale progressive failures that develop from small-scale local failures. However, the mechanism driving progressive failure is still not clear. Here, the behaviours of shield tunnel joints were researched; then, a 3-dimensional numerical model was established based on the CEL method. In the numerical model, progressive failure was successfully reproduced, and the underlying mechanism was clarified. Based on the analysis, three countermeasures against progressive failure were proposed, and their effectiveness was discussed.
