Landslides in the metamorphic northern border of the dolomites (North Italy)
Abstract Hundreds of landslides occurred in August 1966 in the mantle of soil and weathered rock on the quartz phyllites along the northern border zone of the Dolomites (N. Italy). Heavy precipitation during a period of five days caused the sliding phenomena. Sliding was promoted by the type of soil and rock, the steepness of the slopes, and the absence of a protecting forest cover. A sample area was studied in detail. The following types of landslides were observed: planar block glide, rotational block slump with earthflow, debris slide, debris flow, and complex landslide. Data are presented on precipitation, grain size analysis of material in situ and slided soil material, on slopes, and on extent, depth and frequency of the various types of landslides.
