Liquefaction of low plasticity silts
Abstract The influence of plasticity index on the liquefaction potential of silty soil of low plasticity (PI of 1·7 to 3·4) has been studied in detail. The change in plasticity index was achieved by mixing the low plasticity silt with 5 and 10% by weight of kaolinite clay. The test results indicate that the application of cyclic loads to saturated samples of silts result in a build up of pore water pressure equal to initial mean effective confining pressure. The samples also underwent failure in terms of 5, 10, or 20% double amplitude strains. It was further observed that the effect of increased plasticity (in the low plasticity range) was to reduce the liquefaction resistance of these soils. This has been related with their initial UU strength.
