Experimental and numerical study on timber-to-bamboo scrimber connection with self-tapping screws
Abstract The main objective of this study is to investigate the shear performance of timber-to-bamboo scrimber connection with self-tapping screws. Firstly, single-shear tests were conducted to obtain the load-displacement curves of timber-to-bamboo scrimber connections in the experimental study. The key parameters being investigated included the diameter, number and angle relative to the grain direction of the screw. The test results revealed that the shear capacity of the connection increased with the increase of the screw diameter and number, as opposed to the rise of the angle. Then, the finite element model for specimens has been verified by comparing it with the experimental data and used to conduct a numerical analysis of the connection.
Highlights The performance of timber-to-bamboo scrimber connection with self-tapping screws was experimentally investigated. The key parameters and stress distributions of the timber-to-bamboo scrimber connection were thoroughly analysed. The finite element model is validated by the test data and used to conduct parametric analysis of the connection.
