Estimates of peak wind loads on cladding panels
Abstract Peak wind induced loads on cladding panels fixed to the windward face of a building are considered. Two equations are derived which describe the ratio of the peak load on a cladding panel to the mean load. These are called gust factor equations for the peak panel loads. The equations do not apply if the panel is in a region of separated flow. One equation is based on a linearized theory for the pressure developed on the windward face of a tall building. The other is a nonlinear form of the same equation. The equations are used to calculate peak loads on cladding panels positioned at various heights on a tall building. An hypothesis is advanced to explain the observed relatively frequent failure of cladding panels at low levels on some tall buildings.
