Surface treatment to reduce corrosion on stainless steel
AbstractA preoxidation treatment for stainless steel which produces an improvement in corrosion resistance is described. Stainless steel oxidises at high temperature by forming an outer spinel oxide. This oxide is gradually reduced by chromium at the metal/oxide interface to form a protective rhombohedral oxide. The rate of6growth of the spinel layer is significantly greater than the rhombohedral oxide. By preoxidising the stainless steel surface in conditions that produce a rhombohedral oxide directly the subsequent oxidation rates can be reduced dramatically. Results are presented for weight gains on untreated and pretreated steels at 823K and 923K. The oxide which forms on the untreated and pretreated steel is characterised using X-ray diffraction, Auger spectroscopy and Secondary Ion Mass Spectroscopy.
