A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
AbstractWith its volcanic landforms, coastal areas, and imported palm trees, Cheju is fast becoming known as Korea 's island paradise. While much of Korea's economic progress over the past several decades has been attributed to its industrialized, exportdriven economy, recent changes in Cheju suggest that tourism has also emerged as a vital part of Korea's future. Growing prosperity in Korea has increased the demand for leisure time activities and has spawned the development of resorts, golf courses, and other recreational amenities such as those developed on Cheju. The growth of Cheju 's visitor industry has created special challenges for planners, including urban design, environmental protection, social issues and ensuring an adequate level of infrastructure.
