Functional forms and aggregate U.S. domestic air cargo demand: 1950–1977
Abstract Empirical demand functions for U.S. domestic air cargo, passenger/cargo and all-cargo activity are constructed and estimated with time series data from 1950 to 1977. The Box-Cox transformation technique is used to choose the generalized functional form for the air cargo demand functions. The empirical results suggest that neither a linear nor log form is appropropriate for the passenger/cargo demand function in this sample period, according to the Box-Cox maximum likelihood criteria. Also the implications of choosing alternative functional forms for long-term forecasts are also discussed.
