Breakwaters for the protection of Romanian beaches
AbstractThe first part of the paper presents the main features of morphological processes along the Romanian Black Sea coast, such as the influence of the changes in the sediment regime at the Danube mouths onshore erosion and the effect of jetties and harbour works in interrupting longshore sand transport. The second part of the paper presents the results of model tests, mathematical modelling and field measurements concerning the use of breakwaters as beach protection works. These results show that sand provided by artificial nourishment of breakwater “accretion capacity“ has a good stability, allowing to widen the beach in zones with severe erosion.
