A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
AbstractAfter an introductory survey of recent measures taken by the French Government to counteract the decrease in diversity of French landscapes the article describes the negative effects of the abandonment of farmland in France. The economical impact is significant: not only farms, but whole villages are deserted and widespread depopulation of the countryside is the result. On abandoned land vegetation develops from rough grass via a scrub stage to uncontrolled woodland. This looks unattractive, and poses a fire hazard in certain regions. Some possible solutions such as controlled afforestation, cellulose producing schemes, and subsistence farming are discussed. The necessity for a national landscape policy is advocated, and the need for training more landscape planners is underlined.
