Mechanical behaviors and failure modes of sandwich cylinders with square honeycomb cores under axial compression
Abstract Quasi-static axial compression performance and failure modes of brazed sandwich cylinders with square honeycomb cores were investigated by using a combined approach of experimentally measurement, analytical modeling and numerical simulation. Analytical models, including Euler buckling, face yielding, global buckling of the cylinder, local buckling of shell and local buckling of core, were proposed to estimate the axial compressive properties of sandwich cylinder. The corresponding failure maps were subsequently constructed. The theoretical prediction results are in line with those obtained by numerical simulation and experimental measurement. In addition, the effects of key geometrical parameters on the initial failure load, specific stiffness and energy absorption of sandwich cylinders were explored systematically.
Highlights Novel all-metallic square-honeycombed sandwich cylinders were proposed. Quasi-static axial compressive behavior was studied. Five different failure modes were proposed to estimate the axial compressive properties of sandwich cylinder.
