Straw disposal and utilization: An economic evaluation of the alternative end-uses for wheat straw in the UK
AbstractThe possible costs and benefits of disposing of wheat straw in different ways are examined. Relative to burning the straw in the field, the economic gains from using it as a fuel, as a raw material for papermaking and as an animal feed are studied. At 1986 prices, it appears that using straw as a fuel or selling it for papermaking is unlikely to be as economic as burning it in the field. Also, in many circumstances feeding straw, whether treated with an alkali or not, to beef cattle may realize no financial advantage over burning it. The one end-use investigated, which does show promise, is the conservation of the grain and straw together. Feeding the conserved whole-crop cereal to beef cattle is projected to increase profit margins by nearly 20% compared to the next best alternative. With 50% of the UK wheat being fed to animals, it seems an end-use worth further study.
