On the across-wind oscillation of tall buildings
Abstract Across-wind oscillations of tall buildings were investigated. The flow velocity-RMS response relations of across-wind oscillations of tall building models, which have three values of depth/width ratio of cross section, in four kinds of flow were measured. An assumption that the oscillations are forced oscillations caused by the dynamic lift force arising from vortex shedding was made, and the flow velocity-RMS response relations were calculated from the characteristics of the dynamic lift force which applied to rigid models. The two results were compared. It was found that the assumption is correct for tall buildings, whose depth/width ratio of cross-section is not less than one, in shear flows.
