Abstract Reference samples of various sedimentary rocks that are used for road building in Belgium have been submitted to the usual mechanical tests and petrographically investigated. Comparison of both results leads to several correlations between the geological parameters and the mechanical properties. Knowledge of these relationships allows a better understanding and appraisal of the rock behaviour of those rocks that may undergo mechanical strains. Such an investigation was carried out to better orientate the tests and the interpretation of the results thereof. It is also useful at the beginning of any investigation of natural rocks as well as providing a rapid control method during the production of the rock material and its deposition at the site of the road works.
Résumé Deséchantillons représentatifs des différentes roches sédimentaires utilisées dans le domaine routier en Belgique ontétésoumis aux essais mécaniques courants etàuneétude pétrographique compléte. La confrontation des résultats fait apparaître des corrélations entre paramétres géologiques et propriétés mécaniques. La connaissance de ces relations permet une meilleure appréciation des comportements du matériau rocheux soumisàcontraintes mécaniques; elle peut orienter les essais et conduireàl'interprétation des résultats. Elle offre en outre des possibilités d'investigation dés la prospection des gisements rocheux et un moyen rapide de controˆle lors de leur production et de leur dépoˆt sur chantier.
