Elastic distortional buckling of tapered I-beams
Abstract An approximate finite element method is developed for analysing the distortional buckling of tapered doubly-symmetric I-section beam-columns. The method is applicable for various types to tapering, and various conditions of loading, end support and restraint. A computer program based on this finite element method is described, and the convergence and accuracy of the buckling loads are demonstrated. The method is then used to show the effects of distortion on tapered beams with various flange to web thickness ratios, and the significance of the end conditions and the length on the elastic critical loads of certain tapered beam-columns.
