Some factors affecting the liquefaction and flow of saturated sands in laboratory tests
Abstract Following the pioneering work of Castro (1969), the liquefaction of loose saturated sand under monotonic loading has often been investigated by means of the triaxial test. However, it has remained difficult, on the basis of published data, to assess the importance of several factors suspected of influencing the observed liquefaction behaviour. Laboratory investigations have therefore been conducted into the effect of a number of these factors, some relating to test technique (strain rate, specimen preparation and stress history) and some to material characteristics (compressibility and particle shape). In this paper the results are reported and interpreted within the conceptual framework established by previous researchers.
