Application of the scanning electron microscope to the study of the initial hydration of portland cement paste
AbstractThe preparation of samples for electron microscope studies of Portland cement paste at very early ages requires special techniques for forming soft paste samples, halting hydration without altering the structure of the paste and coating fracture surfaces with a conductive material. Freeze-drying the paste and sputter coating the fracture surface with gold has produced satisfactory results.
