AbstractThis paper reviews the current state of the art in the stressed skin design of steel structures. Particular attention is paid to the contribution made by Professor Rolf Baehre over a period of about 30 years. Some necessary and significant improvements to this state of the art are proposed. The author urges that these should be incorporated into current design codes at the earliest opportunity.
