Effects of asymmetry on the response of multistorey buildings to earthquakes
Abstract The effects of asymmetry on the response of multistorey buildings to earthquakes are presented using a simple microcomputer based procedure. The degree of asymmetry is varied by changing the position of the core in the buildings. Numerical examples are presented where results have been obtained from the quasistatic code approach and real-time dynamic analysis. Results for deflections, shear forces and bending moments are presented. Significant changes in these responses and in some cases reversal of their directions are obtained by varying the degree of asymmetry. It is also observed that not only the twisting of the building about a vertical axis but also the direction of this twisting have a significant influence on the results. The need for a three-dimensional analysis to account for the effects of assymetry is evident.
