Stability charts for reinforced embankments on soft ground
AbstractDimensionless stability charts are presented for wide, cohesive and cohesionless embankments placed on reinforcement over a cohesive foundation. The charts have been derived using limit equilibrium methods in which the reinforcement is assumed to apply a horizontal force to a potential sliding mass. For cohesive embankments the effect of tension cracking is considered. Account is taken of both tensile and bond failure of the reinforcement, although the treatment of bond failure is not rigorous. The charts are intended to facilitate the preliminary design of reinforced embankments on soft ground but deal only with rotational instability. Other mechanisms of instability exist and must be checked. An example of the application of the charts is given, and attention is drawn to potential difficulties in parameter selection.
