Vortex shedding from bluff cylinders in strongly sheared turbulent streams
Abstract Vortex shedding frequencies across circular and rectangular cylinders in uniformly sheared turbulent flow have been measured at high subcritical Reynolds numbers and large shear parameters and turbulence intensities. The results confirm the occurence of spanwise cells with nearly constant shedding frequency. The presence of strong shear and turbulence appears, in general, to cause a strong spanwise variation of the local base pressure coefficient and an appreciable decrease of the average Strouhal number.
