Airborne cadmium, lead and zinc at rural and urban sites in north-west England
Abstract Concentrations of airborne cadmium, lead and zinc have been determined at one urban roadside site and two rural sites in north-west England over both 24-h and 7-day sampling periods. The concentration data for these metals and for sulphate and nitrate have been analysed statistically for both inter- and intra-site correlations, and have been related to low-level wind directions. Enrichment factors relative to aluminium have been calculated, and both deposition fluxes and particle size distributions determined for the three elements. It is concluded that whilst at all sites cadmium originates entirely from regional pollutant transport, lead and to a lesser extent zinc arise mainly from local vehicular sources at the urban site and from regional transport at the rural sites.
