Forecasting telecommunications-travel interactions: The transportation manager's perspective
Abstract Transportation managers have a particular interest in the potential for substitution of telecommunications for travel. As desirable as substitution may be from this perspective, it is not clear that it is the major impact that telecommunications services will have on travel behavior. The current level of knowledge limits our capability to anticipate the impacts of complex interactions between telecommunications and travel. This paper identifies many of the travel impacts that may positively or negatively affect urban and intercity transportation and discusses the problem of forecasting such effects. A series of research directions are suggested to improve our ability to forecast the travel impacts of telecommunications so that opportunities to capitalize on these technological innovations can be captured.
