Statistical data processing in developing countries: Infrastructure considerations
Abstract National statistics are essential for developing countries to formulate and evaluate programs of social and economic investment. These countries face unique difficulties in establishing a statistical infrastructure. The importance of computing equipment in collecting, making available and analyzing statistics both poses additional problems and offers substantial opportunities. Statistical agencies in developing countries need to put in place mechanisms that will allow them and their statistical programs to benefit from advances in information technology and establish a viable basis for using it locally.
