A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Auckland
Abstract Radical changes in the New Zealand economy since 1984 have had their effect on the functions and social fabric of metropolitan Auckland. In a city with less than 200 years of European history, these changes signal a transformation of unparalleled significance. This city profile describes the growth of Auckland, with emphasis on the patterns of the ‘modern’ (1960–1984) era, and a particular focus on the current phases of metropolitan development. It is suggested that the economic policies of the mid-1980s will lead to Auckland assuming a new preeminence on the Pacific rim, notwithstanding a recent period of slower growth.
