Methane production from fresh versus dry dairy manure
AbstractDung cake is thought by some in Africa to be a better substrate for methane production than fresh manure. This contradicts with the general thinking that fresher manure is more productive in methane yield than older manure. The discrepancy was due to the lack of information on two quantities; the amount of organic materials lost during drying and a comparison of the final methane yields from fresh and dry manure. This study examined batch digestion of fresh and dry dairy manure and showed that the methane yields (based on m3 CH4/kg volatile solids fed) from fresh and dry manure were the same statistically (α=0·05). However, fresh manure produced a greater total volume of methane than the dry manure when the loss in organic materials during drying was taken into account.
