Community sensitivity to a hazardous waste facility
AbstractCommunity attitudes toward hazardous waste regulatory policies in general, and specific awareness and perception of a nearby hazardous waste facility, are examined in this paper. The study area is a middle-income residential neighborhood located in Charlotte, North Carolina, U.S.A. The study findings mirror earlier U.S. studies which show an intense anxiety toward hazardous and toxic materials land users and concern about the effectiveness of public policies designed to protect the public or ameliorate the negative impacts of hazardous material. Surprisingly, most residents are unaware of the nearby hazardous waste facility. A statistical analysis of the data finds that distance of the residence from the facility and educational attainment of the respondents are effective predictors of individual knowledge. The design of the nearby facility is a hypothesized explanation for the low level of saliency.
