Timber preservation in building and construction
AbstractDespite the traditionally wide use of timber as a building material, preservation standards are not always mandatory specifications covered by Building Regulations. Protection against damp, insects and fungi is almost exclusively left to the discretion of the designers or builders. The author considers the preservatives most widely used and their areas of application. He also comments on the future for wood preservation in Europe as it will be affected by standardisation after 1992. Dr Coggins observes that European legislation covering timber preservatives is currently very un-coordinated under different national requirements.
