A general appraisal of consumptive wildlife utilization in Zambia
AbstractThis appraisal examines some broad perspectives of the evolution of consumptive wildlife utilization in Zambia, and its current ethical and economic status. Historical alienation of local communities' traditional rights over wildlife resources, coupled with economic depression in Zambia, are considered to be major reasons for the emergence of unsustainable, illegal exploitation of wildlife. A new approach to wildlife management based on the Zambian Government's move towards decentralization and self-sufficiency has begun to return some responsibility to local communities for the care of their traditional resources. This is leading to a more equitable sharing of benefits and revenues, generated by consumptive wildlife utilization, between the central Government and the local communities. Already there are signs that this approach is benefitting the conservation and management of wildlife, as well as community development.
