An approach to the selection of roofing materials for durability
AbstractThe durability of roofing materials is greatly influenced by local climate and air pollution conditions. Service life predictions of these materials are always very complex procedures and demand more knowledge than the unsystematic methods usually used in building design. This paper describes a method of approaching durable material selection. The aim of this methodology is to assure the building designer that the chosen material will provide satisfactory durability at low cost during the design life of the building. This is achieved by developing a theoretical basis for a computerized system for improving the processes of material selection. Also a system is introduced to describe the link that exists between initial costs, maintenance costs and the durability of roofing materials.
