Water recreation in North America
AbstractThe history of water resources development in the U.S.A. is traced to the period of major recreational usage. Settings for water recreation are characterized including shorelines, beaches, estuaries, freshwater wetlands, freshwater lakes, saline lakes, reservoirs, rivers and streams. Water-recreation activities are classified into kinetic, situation-based, harvest-based and substitution-based experiences. Water-recreation demand in the U.S.A. is summarized with regard to major water-recreation activities and who the recreationists are. Conflicts between water-recreation user groups and allocation problems are reviewed as well as ecological carrying-capacity problems. Water-recreation management issues are discussed as well as landscape/waterscape compatible use conflict. Major trends and opportunities for water recreation are summarized.
