Educational response to differences in environmental attitudes among lake fishermen
AbstractA socio-ecological survey carried out on 110 commercial fishermen from Lakes Mikri Prespa, Kerkini and Visthonis - all Wetlands of International Importance - was used to study the environmental attitudes/opinions of the fishermen who are the main users of these wetlands. Comparisons were made among the fishermen of the three lakes regarding their attitudes/opinions towards the elements of the wetland ecosystem, to birds and more specifically to pelicans. It was found that fishermen at Visthonis differ significantly from fishermen from other lakes, expressing in general the most negative attitudes, particularly being hostile to fish-eating birds. These negative attitudes can be changed by conservation education. The results of the study were used to design an educational programme addressed, as a priority, to fishermen of Lake Visthonis and aiming at highlighting the values of the wetlands and the sustainable use of its resources. A similar programme was specifically prepared and implemented for the fishermen of Lake Kerkini.
